The university offers more than 100 degree programs, including many innovative interdisciplinary programs that allow students to design personalized courses of study with faculty guidance.

Programs of Distinction
Many of the programs offered at George Mason University have won national and state acclaim. Below are some of the programs recognized for their excellence and innovation.

*Department of Economics
Respectfully referred to as "Masonomics," Mason has earned international acclaim for its programs in Austrian economics, experimental economics, and public choice. In 2008 the Southern Economic Journal ranked the PhD program forty-first overall in the United States. The department is proud of its two Nobel laureates, professors emeriti James Buchanan and Vernon Smith.

School of Law
U.S. News and World Report ranks George Mason University's Graduate School of Law in Tier One. This ranking acknowledges the School of Law as being among the best graduate schools in the nation and the "fastest rising law school in America".

* Industrial/Organizational Psychology Graduate Program
This program is ranked #6 in the country by USNWR. This ranking is the highest ranking received by any program at GMU.

* PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology in the College of Science
This program is the first of its kind in Virginia, combining expertise in biology and the information sciences.

* Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution
This institute offered the country's first doctoral program in conflict resolution.

* Graduate Programs in Creative Writing, Nursing, and Public Administration
These programs have all been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as being among the top programs in the country.

* Center for Global Education
In December 2003, the Institute of International Education (IIE) ranked the center second in the nation among Doctoral institutions in terms of study abroad students.

* Ph.D. in History Program
This program combines traditional approaches to the study of history with innovative new media applications to historical research and teaching. Students have opportunities to work with the internationally recognized Center for History and New Media. U.S. News and World Report recently ranked George Mason's groundbreaking Ph.D. in History program as 51st in the nation.

* Volgeanau School of Information Technology and Engineering
The first engineering school in the United States focused on information technology rather than the traditional engineering sciences, and the first school to offer a doctoral program in information technology.

* School of Public Policy
This academic unit offers the largest Ph.D. program in public policy in the United States and, according to the National Science Foundation, ranks among the top programs in the nation in terms of federal research expenditures by discipline.

* School of Management
The School of Management is one of less than 10 percent of business schools worldwide accredited in both business and accounting by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. The school is also ranked in the top 15 percent of all AACSB accredited business schools by U.S. News & World Report.

* Writing Across the Curriculum
In the 2006 college issue of US News and World Report, Mason's program was ranked among the top twenty schools in the country for writing in the disciplines. We are one of only five public institutions on the list. This is the fourth year in a row our highly regarded program has appeared in the rankings.
